60 Women Nominated for Holmes Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 27, 2012) -- A record 60 outstanding University of Kentucky women, from virtually every area of the campus, have been nominated for the two 2012 Sarah Bennett Holmes Awards, one for faculty and one for staff.

All nominees will be honored and the winners announced at the 19th annual Sarah Bennett Homes Award Luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 8, in the Frank H. Harris Grand Ballroom of the Student Center.

The Women’s Forum, which organizes the annual event, invites the campus community to make a reservation to attend the Sarah Bennett Holmes Award Luncheon in support of your favorite nominee. Luncheon reservations are $15. Tables for eight may be reserved for $120. The reservation form is available on the Women’s Forum web site, www.uky.edu/womensforum. Reservations for the luncheon are open until Friday, March 2.

The featured guest speakers for the luncheon are Louise Graham, Robert G. Lawson, William H. Fortune and Dana Walton-Macaulay, associate dean of students.

Initiated by the UK Women’s Forum in 1994, the award is named for Sarah Bennett Holmes, former UK dean of women (1942-1957), for whom Holmes Hall is named. The award is presented annually to two women – one faculty and one staff employee – whose actions and activities promote the growth and well-being of women not only at UK, but across the Commonwealth. Any woman (regular staff or faculty) currently employed by UK may be nominated for the Sarah Bennett Holmes Award, which carries a $1,000 cash award.

Dana Walton-Macaulay, the 2011 staff recipient, said, “The Sarah Bennett Holmes Award reminded me that reaching out to serve other women in our community is important, and has a positive impact on the entire UK community.  I was both honored and encouraged as a recipient of the SBH award, and have been encouraged to keep working to positively influence others to keep going, even when it’s tough!”
