Academic Enhancement Provides its 100,000th Peer Tutoring Session

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 9, 2013) The Peer Tutoring Program in The Study reached its 100,000th peer tutoring session last semester. The biggest resource offered by Academic Enhancement, the department provided more than 18,000 sessions last year alone, and 68 percent of those students visited The Study more than once.

The Peer Tutoring program, which was started in the fall of 2003, has experienced substantial growth since then.

“It's been very exciting to see the growth of AE's Peer Tutoring Program since we implemented it eight years ago," James Breslin, the associate director of Academic Enhancement said. "After providing just over 600 tutoring sessions in the first semester, to have provided more than 100,000 now, seems remarkable. What excites us in Academic Enhancement is being able to provide high quality peer tutoring in a comfortable, laid back environment.”

The Peer Tutoring Program provides students with the opportunity to receive help with homework, take steps to deepen their knowledge of course material and network with fellow classmates. The program is offered on Sundays from 6-10 p.m.; Monday-Thursday from 3-10 p.m.; and Fridays from noon-5 p.m. Peer tutoring is offered in more than 30 subjects from peer tutors who have earned at least an “A” or “B” in the course for which they are tutoring, and all peer tutors have been certified by the College Reading and Learning Association.

Academic Enhancement welcomes students to visit them in The Study, located on the 3rd floor of Complex Commons. To learn more about the Peer Tutoring Program and the many other services provided by the department, visit www.uky.edu/ae.
