Art Museum Home to New Daniel Ludwig Sculpture
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 18, 2012) − The new year has brought a stunning new sculpture to the Art Museum at the University of Kentucky. "Female Figure" is by Lexington native Daniel Ludwig, a contemporary artist who is known for his mastery of classical traditions. The bronze nude was purchased with funds provided by the museum’s Collectors group, whose dues are used to acquire important works of art for the museum.
Ludwig is a noted realist artist who regularly shows work in New York and London and recently participated in Art Miami. The artist was involved in every step of the process in creating this life-size figure study, from sculpting the original in wax, to working closely with a foundry in Rhode Island on casting, and then hand-finishing the piece. He created and applied the patina — a combination of three chemicals which provide subtle color variations of deep bronze and green. Ludwig even designed the pedestal which is slightly smaller than the woman’s body, so that she is not contained by it.
"His command of the human figure has never been more evident than in this exquisite sculpture," says Janie Welker, curator of collections and exhibitions at the Art Museum at UK.
In a sense, the sculpture has returned home. The artwork's roots date back to the exhibition "Folly and Grace: Mythic Paintings by Daniel Ludwig," which was presented in 1994 at the Art Museum at UK. Ludwig says he made a series of large-scale drawings of figures in conjunction with the paintings in the exhibition and felt as though he were "carving the figure in charcoal." This spurred his interest in working three-dimensionally, and he embarked on a series of sculptures of the figures.
Currently Ludwig makes his home in Brooklyn, N.Y., with his wife, the artist Anne Leone. He holds a bachelor's degree from the Rhode Island School of Design and a master's degree from the University of Cincinnati. Before becoming a fulltime artist, Ludwig served as an associate professor of art from 1986 to 2002 at the Salve Regina University in Rhode Island. He has been represented by the Heike Pickett Gallery in Versailles since its inception and for more than 20 years by the Cadogan Contemporary Gallery in London, England. The artist is also represented in New York and San Francisco by the Jenkins Johnson Gallery and will have an exhibition at the gallery’s California venue next year.
This isn't the first piece of Ludwig's to be added to the collection at the Art Museum at UK. The museum also owns a painting and a smaller sculpture by the artist, both of which are currently on display. Ludwig will visit the museum this May to present a public talk on his work.
Since its founding in September 1999, the Collectors group at the Art Museum at UK has grown to more than 80 members whose dues have provided the funds to buy important sculptures and paintings in the areas of Impressionism, American modernism and contemporary sculpture.
The Art Museum at UK is located in the Singletary Center for the Arts at the corner of Rose Street and Euclid Avenue. Hours are noon-5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and noon-8 p.m. Friday.
