Big Blue Can"Go Red" in Fight for Women's Heart Disease

LEXINGTON, KY (Jan. 26, 2011) - Although "Wildcat blue" is the preferred color at University of Kentucky and Gill Heart Institute, plans are under way to "Go Red" to spread awareness of heart disease, the number one killer of women. National Wear Red day, sponsored by the American Heart Association, is being celebrated Feb. 4. On this day, faculty and staff (who have their supervisor's approval), and students can wear jeans in exchange for making a donation to the "Go Red" campaign. And, of course, wearing red is encouraged. In 2010, UK was in the top 20 organizations in the nation for "Go Red" fundraising. UK was also the top "Go Red" day fundraiser in the multi-state region of Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Delaware, beating out several large medical centers. To help extend UK's winning streak while fighting heart disease, stop by the third floor of the Kentucky Clinic, across from the Big Blue Deli on Jan. 26, Feb. 1 or Feb. 2, or the UK Chandler Hospital north lobby on Jan. 27 or Feb. 3, and make a donation of at least $5 to fund research for heart disease in women. Participants contributing will receive a sticker to acknowledge their support and can prepare to wear red and tell others about the impact of heart disease on women. (Click here for some fast facts.)
