A Big UK Welcome to Dr. Janie Heath

On Monday, I had the pleasure of sending the following email to the UK campus. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Janie Heath, the new Dean of the UK College of Nursing, to the UK family.

Dear Colleagues and Students,

I am very pleased to announce that Janie Heath has accepted our offer to be the Dean of the UK College of Nursing as well as holder of the Warwick Professorship in Nursing.

Dr. Heath, who is currently the associate dean of Academic Programs and the Thomas Saunders III Endowed Professor at the University of Virginia School of Nursing, will take over as dean at UK on Aug. 1, pending Board approval.

As associate dean at UVA's School of Nursing, Dean Heath is the chief academic officer responsible for the quality and integrity of education of the Commonwealth of Virginia's flagship nursing program. She also has a long and distinguished scholarly record at Virginia and other notable institutions of higher learning in Georgia, South Carolina and Washington, D.C. over a nearly 40-year career.

She is a widely recognized national leader in nursing education, tobacco control and health care outreach. That emphasis and quality, as well as many other attributes, make her an ideal fit for this important College and its continued leadership in health care and service.

Nurses are on the front lines of health care and service throughout our Commonwealth and beyond. Our nationally ranked College of Nursing not only educates nursing leaders but also conducts critical research and outreach efforts regarding many of Kentucky's most pressing health challenges, such as smoking and heart disease.

Dr. Heath received strong marks from the search committee and from groups within the college that she met with when visiting with us earlier. In turn, she has told me and many others that she was deeply attracted to this position because of the College's longstanding reputation for excellence, its outstanding students, faculty and staff, and its commitment to innovation in health-care delivery.

I also want to take a moment to thank Pat Howard, who has been serving as our interim dean since late 2012. I often say that people make the place. Dean Howard is an example of the best of that statement -- someone committed to leadership and service and doing what it takes to continue to move our College and University forward as we strive to honor our mission of education, research and service for the Commonwealth and beyond.

I hope you will join me in thanking Pat for her service, which of course will continue.

I also hope you will join me now in welcoming Dean Heath to our UK family. She is married to Mike Heath, a retired US Army Colonel who was the pharmacy consultant to the US Army Surgeon General. They have three married children and four grandchildren living in Charlotte, North Carolina and Charleston, South Carolina.

We look forward to Dean Heath's arrival this summer as we continue our critically important work and service together.

All the best,

Christine Riordan
