LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 10, 2015) — The Student Activities Board's Engaging Issues Committee shoots for the stars with its newest #TrendingTopics interactive debate focusing on space exploration at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, in the auditorium of the William T. Young Library.

Through #TrendingTopics, Engaging Issues looks to create an inclusive space for students to discuss their opinions in an educational manner on relevant and sometimes controversial topics. Space is without a doubt one of our greatest unknowns, one of the most mentally and imaginatively stimulating topics in our society today. In this debate, the question “what are the benefits and difficulties of the exploration of space?” will be discussed.

Engaging Issues has brought in a panel of experts to discuss the positives and negatives of exploring space, as well as answering questions asked by the audience through a tweet wall. Audience members should bring their smartphones, tablets and laptops and tweet opinions and questions using #TrendingTopics.

“This issue has become prevalent due to the recently changing budget that our government is providing NASA for space exploration,” James Collard, SAB director of Engaging Issues, said. “The idea of other worlds being present, and even the colonization of other planets, is one that has historically sparked the interest of many Americans. This topic has even made its way into popular culture through several movies.”

SAB brings more than 100 entertaining, educational and enriching programs that are reflective of contemporary issues and trends to the University of Kentucky annually. These programs are designed to enhance the college experience for students, faculty, staff, and the greater Lexington community.
