Blazer Cafe Re-opens After Brief Delay

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 10, 2013) — Food services were interrupted briefly Tuesday night when an old fitting in the chilled waterline located in the ceiling above Blazer Café broke under stress at 8:30 p.m. Repairs have been made and the dining hall will operate under normal hours, after opening at 10 a.m. today.

The water flooded one area of the dining facility, forcing a temporary closure of the restaurant and evacuation of students and UK Dining Services employees.  However, residents of Blazer Hall were not disturbed as domestic water service to the residential areas was not interrupted.

The stress causing the old pipe fitting to break Tuesday night started when workers, anticipating warmer weather, filled Blazer Hall’s air conditioning system with chilled water,” said Kevin Kreide, PPD director.  Repairs were completed by 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 10.

Minimal damage was noted in Blazer Café.

“At the worst there was about two inches of water in one section of the dining area, but it was cleaned up quickly.  With the exception of some blowers and dehumidifiers making a bit of noise, everything is back to normal in Blazer Café,” said Scott Henry, director of Dining Services.

Dining Services officials collected the names and ID numbers of the students who were forced to abandon their meals when the café was evacuated Tuesday night. These students will have their meal swipes or the cost of their meal reimbursed.
