BSU Celebrates Students' Community Contributions

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 8, 2015) -- Hosted by the University of Kentucky Black Student Union, the 35th annual Lyman T. Johnson Student Awards banquet is slated at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, at the UK Student Center Grand Ballroom. During the reception, light refreshments and dinner will be served at 6 p.m. until seating begins at 6:45 p.m.

Admission is $10 for staff and faculty and $10 for general admission. Tables of 8 are available for purchase for the price of $70. Today is the deadline to buy tables, but single admission tickets will be sold now through the evening of the banquet. The tickets are available at the Student Involvement Ticket Center, 253 Student Center. The ticket center is open Monday – Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Lyman T. Johnson awards event recognizes and awards students who have exemplified outstanding service, leadership and achievement on campus and within the larger community. In 1949, Johnson led the efforts to desegregate UK, winning a lawsuit to be admitted as a graduate student, becoming the first African-American student at UK. In 1999, an historical marker honoring his courage and tenacity was erected in front of Frazee Hall.
