Empty Bottle String Band to Close Appalachia Concert Series
Empty Bottle String Band perform at Pickin' in the Park.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 5, 2013) – The "Appalachia in the Bluegrass" concert series will wrap up with a performance by the Empty Bottle String Band at noon Friday, Dec. 6. The performance will take place at the Niles Gallery, located in the University of Kentucky’s Lucille C. Little Fine Arts Library and Learning Center. The concert is free and open to the public.
The Empty Bottle String Band, who originally formed to play a one-time show at a local farmers market in Tennessee, has already reached new heights in popularity all over the southeast, appearing regionally at Bristol’s Rhythm & Roots Reunion, on the nationally broadcast TV show "Song of the Mountains" on PBS, on the WDVX "Blue Plate Special," on WETS "Studio One," at the International Biscuit Festival and at the Charleston Bluegrass Festival.
This old-time string band is composed of energetic and artistic multi-instrumentalists and singers who met in East Tennessee State University's Bluegrass, Old-Time and Country Music Studies. They are dedicated to the preservation and performance of traditional Appalachian songs, ballads and tunes, and will treat the audience to fresh interpretations of standards in the old-time repertoire, as well as lesser known songs they've dug up from the archives. The 'Bottles' are made up of Stephanie Jeter on autoharp, Kristal Harman on guitar, Tyler Hughes on banjo, Alex Moore on bass, and Ryan Nickerson on fiddle.
The “Appalachia in the Bluegrass” concert series celebrates the old time roots of American folk music by featuring a diverse range of traditional musical expression. The concert series showcased 13 different groups from the Kentucky area ranging from artists straight off their front porch to those who have earned international acclaim.
The John Jacob Niles Center for American Music, host of the concert series, is a collaborative research and performance center maintained by the UK College of Fine Arts, UK School of Music and UK Libraries.
