Extravaganza Returns to Feature acoUstiKats' 20-Year Reunion

Published: Oct 22, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 22, 2012) — Join the 70-voice University of Kentucky Men’s Chorus for a special concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, in UK's historic Memorial Hall. The sixth annual Men’s Chorus Fall Extravaganza has quickly become one of the most popular concerts at UK. Featuring the nationally renown UK Men’s Chorus and the popular a cappella group acoUstiKats, the Fall Extravaganza is an entertaining evening of all-male voices.

This year’s concert features a special 20-year reunion of UK’s a cappella group the acoUstiKats. An all-male a cappella group, the acoUstiKats have performed for thousands of people at events ranging from basketball games, corporate parties, church groups to community events. There are now more than 100 former acoUstiKats members, and the Men’s Chorus is inviting all of them to return to perform at this concert tradition.

Jefferson Johnson, director of choral activities, formed the acoUstiKats in 1993 during his first semester at UK School of Music in the UK College of Fine Arts. Each year, the ensemble of 16 talented young men brings their distinctive sounds to events all across the Commonwealth. As part of the UK Men’s Chorus, this group serves to promote and encourage male singing of all ages.

The other group helping to shape this concert into an unforgettable evening full of music, UK Men’s Chorus, has been making national news as one of the elite college choirs in the nation. In the last six years, they have been selected to perform at several national conventions, including the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) in Salt Lake City, the National Collegiate Choral Organization (NCCO) in San Antonio and most notably at the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) national convention in Chicago, where the group received standing ovations after both of their performances at the prestigious convention.

Seating for the UK Men's Chorus Fall Extravaganza concert is reserved. Tickets range in price and are $20 for adults and $10 for students and children. Tickets can be purchased by calling the UK Student Center Ticket Box Office at 859-257-8427.
