Homecoming 2011 Ends With Winners, Royalty

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 22, 2011) – Culminating a week of fun and tradition, Mary Ellen Wimberly, daughter of Clint and Linda Wimberly from Richmond, Ky., and Micah Fielden, son of Michael and Luanne Fielden from Lexington, were crowned the University of Kentucky homecoming queen and king during halftime ceremonies at the UK versus Jacksonville State homecoming game today.

Wimberly is a junior Finance and Economics major and was sponsored in the homecoming royalty candidacy by Governor's Scholars Program/Governor's School for the Arts Alumni Club. Fielden is a senior Agricultural Biotechnology major and was sponsored by Delta Sigma Phi fraternity.

Other finalists for queen and king were:

  • Kendall Corbin, a senior agriculture biotechnology major, daughter of Kent and Barb Corbin from Flemingsburg, Ky., sponsored by College of Agriculture Student Council.
  • Nikki Hurt, a senior agricultural biotechnology major, daughter of Rocky and Myra Hurt from Lexington, sponsored by Student Government.
  • Elizabeth Shemo, a senior integrated strategic communication major, daughter of Mary Ann and Ron Shemo from Shelbyville, Ky., sponsored by Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
  • Michelle Studeny, a senior human nutrition major, daughter of Mark and Jana Studeny from Huntington, W. Va., sponsored by Delta Tau Delta fraternity.
  • Alex Brewer, a senior human nutrition major, son of Kerry and Sandra Brewer from Louisville, sponsored by Phi Mu sorority.
  • Taylor Cox, a senior political science major, son of Ben and Regina Cox from Campbellsville, Ky., sponsored by Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
  • Matt Doane, a senior political science and international studies double major, son of Danny and Sandy Doane from Smithfield, Ky., sponsored by Student Government.
  • Grayson “Cody” Jenkins, a senior agricultural economics and community communication and leadership development double major, son of by Michael and Mariga Jenkins and Cheryl Jenkins from Greenville, Ky., sponsored by College of Agriculture Student Council.

Earlier in the week, the 2011 Mr. and Miss Black UK were crowned. Sponsored by the Black Student Union and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Mr. and Miss Black UK pageant is a competition that includes a talent section and choreographed dance. Since the late 1980's student competitors have wowed the crowd with an array of talents every year. Mr. and Miss Black UK 2011 are Ja'Mahl McDaniel and Porsha Jackson.

Last night, the annual Homecoming Step Show, sponsored by the National Pan-Hellenic Council, was held at Memorial Coliseum. Each of UK's historically African-American fraternities and sororities participated in the exciting, traditional event. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., were crowned as the nights winners.

Also UK's student organizations compete in the "Wildcat Cup," a participation and points competition that runs the entire duration of Homecoming. This year's winners are Delta Delta Delta sorority, Delta Tau Delta fraternity, Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow/TEAM Wildcat and Donovan Hall.
