How To Steal Like An Artist

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 6, 2012) – Sometimes it’s okay to steal a few ideas now and then, at least that’s what author and cartoonist Austin Kleon believes. Hear Kleon share his secrets to creativity and success as he talks about his book "Steal Like an Artist" from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, April 9, in Worsham Theater. This event is free and is sponsored by the Student Activities Board.

Kleon has been described as an artist who draws. His most popular books, "Steal Like an Artist" and "Newspaper Blackout" have had reviewers raving on the Internet for his ideas of remixing creativity to form new ideas. "Steal Like an Artist" presents the notion that no idea is original and that all creators of the idea are influenced by so many other things.

Kleon states, “nothing is completely original. All artists' work builds on what came before. Every new idea is just a remix or a mashup of two previous ideas.”

The book is essentially a list of 10 things Kleon wishes he had known before starting college, with the first being “steal like an artist.” During his talk Kleon will share some of the basic premises from the book and the other nine tips for success.

“This event will be fun and engaging as Austin will talk about his own creative process and try to teach those in attendance how to kick start their own [creative process],” said Derek Operle, director of SAB Pop Culture Committee. “Any students wanting to write, design or follow a creative career path would benefit greatly from attending.”

Kleon’s talk will be followed by a book signing.

The Student Activities Board brings more than 100 entertaining, educational and enriching programs that are reflective of contemporary issues and trends to the University of Kentucky annually.
