Joe Castillo to share SandStory at UK

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 22, 2013) – A bag of sand. A piece of glass. Amazing stories. Sand animator Joe Castillo will bring his SandStory to campus at 7 p.m. Monday, March 25, at Memorial Hall. This event, sponsored by the Student Activities Board Cultural Arts Committee, is free and open to the public.

Castillo, who resides in Richmond, Ky., created SandStory after tracks through a split bag of sand piqued his creative interests. Through manipulating sand on a light table, the artist began to tell detailed, meaningful tales with sand and light alone. Castillo’s sand animation landed him a spot on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” where he finished in fifth place. His stint on the show gained his artwork notoriety around the globe, and he has since performed for thousands of people in more than 18 countries.

“Sand animation is an incredibly expressive form of art that is a one of a kind experience,” said SAB Director of Cultural Arts Brittney Woodrum. “Joe Castillo’s SandStory is world-renowned, and we can’t wait for students to see his stories in the sand.”

SandStory is the second event of the Art Matters series, which intends to bring greater awareness to nontraditional forms of art and increase its presence on campus.
