K Week: Community Outreach

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 19, 2012) -- Service is integral to the lives of many Wildcats, and K Week, the university’s fall welcome, offers several events today to introduce new University of Kentucky students to the many opportunities to give back to their community.

Involvement is one of the best ways to help the university seem smaller for new students.

“The Center for Community Outreach: Make a Difference” presents numerous programs dedicated to volunteerism, community service, and ways to advocate for change, including working with children, senior citizens, animal welfare, health promotions, low-income individuals, global issues, philanthropic efforts and more.

For those who have already decided to seek service opportunities in the wider world beyond the boundaries of the campus, Lexington and Kentucky, CCO’s “Alternative Service Breaks: See the World, Change the World” is the perfect one-stop-shop for a cause and destination. During the university’s academic breaks, ASB has organized weekend service trips as well as weeklong service immersions during the winter, spring and summer breaks. Destinations this year include central Kentucky, rural Appalachia, the Gulf Coast, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Ecuador and the Dominican Republic.

If a student’s interest is more directed to serving the student body, UK’s Student Government elected officials will host an open house today in their offices at 120 Student Center. Opportunities include SG’s various committees, services and programs like the specially designed Freshmen Leadership Development Program.

Coordinated by the Office of New Student and Parent Programs in the Division of Student Affairs, K Week is UK’s fall welcome week for freshmen and transfer students.
