Kentucky Artists/Educators School Public on 'High Art'

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 8, 2015)  An exhibition of work by the talented artists/educators guiding the next generation of Kentucky artists opens today in the new gallery space at the University of Kentucky's Art and Visual Studies Building. The show, "High Art," runs Oct. 8-30 and features the work of high school art teachers from across the state of Kentucky. An opening reception celebrating the artists will be held 4:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the gallery. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.

"Art teachers inspire and mentor their students to express themselves and live up to their full potential. But we rarely see the connections between their own artistic production and their classroom endeavors. We wanted to celebrate a range of unique artist/educators by sharing their studio works with a varied Kentucky audience. This exhibition celebrates the combination of curiosity, subject matter and effective use of craft and materials that yields significant artists and artworks," said Marty Henton, senior lecturer in the UK Art Education Area.

Held in conjunction with the Kentucky Art Education Association Fall Conference, being held Oct. 9-10, at UK, the university's Art Education Area and School of Art and Visual Studies in are presenting this exhibition of work of all themes and scales created in the last three years by many of the Commonwealth's high school art teachers.

Selections for the show were made by a panel of three guest jurors that includes artist and Sayre School teacher Georgia Henkel; Director of the UK Art Museum Stuart Horodner; and artist and retired Henry Clay High School teacher Bob Sandford.

The UK School of Art and Visual Studies in the UK College of Fine Arts is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in the fields of art studio, art history and visual studies, and art education.
