Kentucky Center for Smoke-free Policy Recognizes Policymakers and Advocates from Smoke-free Communities at Annual Spring Conference

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 10, 2012) – Elected officials and advocates from Corbin, Manchester, and Somerset will be awarded the Kentucky Center for Smoke-free Policy’s (KCSP) Smoke-free Indoor Air Excellence Award at the annual Spring Conference hosted by the University of Kentucky’s College of Nursing’s KCSP on April 11 at the Doubletree Suites during the conference luncheon from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.  
 

These Kentucky communities will be recognized for their exceptional leadership and collaborative efforts in promoting the health of citizens in their communities by enacting smoke-free ordinances.
 

Rep. Susan Westrom will also receive the Paul Mason Memorial Award award from the Kentucky Public Health Association. The award honors a Kentuckian who has made a significant contribution to benefit our most vulnerable population – the indigent and uninsured.
 

In addition to recognizing elected officials, the KCSP 2012 David B. Stevens, M.D., Smoke-free Advocate of the Year Award will be announced. The nominees for this prestigious advocacy award include:  Kathy Lay, Whitley County Health Department; Dennis Nafus, Smoke-free Kentucky (Northern Kentucky Coalition); and Jean Rosenberg, Floyd County Health Department. The advocate of the year will be recognized for excellence in promoting secondhand smoke education and smoke-free policy.
 

As of April 2012, Kentucky had 34 communities which had enacted smoke-free ordinances or board of health regulations, and 22 of those are comprehensive, covering all workplaces including restaurants and bars. Overall, 34 percent of Kentuckians are protected by comprehensive smoke-free workplaces laws.
