Kyprianou to Receive Chopin Award in Urology

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 17, 2010) − Natasha Kyprianou, a prostate cancer investigator at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center, has been named the 2010 recipient of the Dominique Chopin Distinguished Award in Urology by the European Association of Urology (EAU) and European Society for Urology Research (ESUR).

Kyprianou holds the James F. Hardymon Chair in Urologic Research and is a professor of urology, molecular and cellular biochemistry, pathology and toxicology. Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying prostate cancer progression to metastasis, and apoptosis-driven molecular therapeutics targeting urologic tumors.

[IMAGE1]"For a number of years I have been involved in establishing solid interactions between the EAU/ESUR and their American counterparts, toward getting great science out and mentoring the new generation of urologists and urologic researchers," Kyprianou said. "This is a wonderful recognition, and I am truly honored."

The award recognizes continuous, high-impact contributions to urological research. Criteria for selection include: publications in high quality journals and presentations at international conferences; discoveries in urological science that influenced work of other investigators in the field; successful acquisition of research funds; evidence for successful training of students, residents and post-doctoral fellows; and contributions to the international scientific networks.

The award ceremony will take place during the Annual Meeting of European Society of Urological Research in Vilnius, Lithuania, in October 2010. Kyprianou will deliver a lecture at that time.
