Late Night Film Series Presents 'American Hustle'

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 8, 2014) — The Late Night Film Series is screening “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 9. Then on Thursday, April 10, the series screens “The Mexican Suitcase” at 7 p.m. and “American Hustle” at 10 p.m.  Also being screened by The Late Night Film Series this week are the films “Loose Cannons” at 7 p.m. and “Boogie Nights” at 10 p.m. Friday, April 11.  Admission to all films is free. All films are shown in Worsham Theater in the Student Center.

“Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” follows infamous gonzo journalist and native Kentuckian Hunter S. Thompson, played by Johnny Depp, as he scours the desert and Vegas Strip for psychedelics and tales to tell. Alongside his equally inebriated attorney, played brilliantly by Benicio del Toro, Thompson’s life is one trippy experience. (Rated R, 118 minutes).

In “The Mexican Suitcase,” three lost boxes known as the Mexican Suitcase were recovered in 2007. The boxes, misplaced in the chaos at the start of World War II, contained many of the Spanish Civil War negatives by the legendary photographer Robert Capa and fellow photographers Gerda Taro and David "Chim" Seymour. (Unrated, 86 minutes).

A ruthless conman, shady federal investigator and oafish politician are but some of the colorful characters caught in David O. Russell’s “American Hustle.” This star-studded cast, including Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence, brings out the best in Russell’s unique, passionate characters. (Rated R, 138 minutes).

“Loose Cannons” follows Tommaso, the youngest son of the Cantones, a large, traditional southern Italian family that operates a pasta-making business. On a trip home from studying literature and visiting his boyfriend in Rome, Tommaso decides to tell his parents the truth about himself, until his older brother Antonio ruins his plans. (Rated R, 110 minutes).

Mark Wahlberg’s breakout performance as “Dirk Diggler,” a rising star in the California porn industry, is just one of many fascinating personas in Paul Thomas Anderson’s interpretation of late 1970s and early 1980s culture and style, “Boogie Nights.” (Rated R, 155 minutes).

Worsham Theater is located on the first floor of the University of Kentucky Student Center Addition. All Late Night Film Series screenings are free to students, staff, faculty and guests.
