Leaving a Lasting Legacy

Published: Apr 17, 2013

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 17, 2013) — They say the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and for graduating students, UK’s Student Activities Board is celebrating the end of their collegiate journey with Legacy Week. SAB’s first-ever Legacy Week began on Monday, April 15, and continues through Friday, April 19. The week provides four events for students to wrap up the semester and celebrate their own legacy at UK.

The week’s events kicked off last night with “Soundbites with Sundy Best.” Sundy Best is a Kentucky-based band that has gained notoriety throughout the country with their album door without a screen that includes singles such as “Home” and “Lily.”

The fun begins today at 11:52 a.m. at Patterson Office Tower Plaza for the annual Ping Pong Ball Drop. Thousands of ping pong balls will be dropped from the 18th floor of Patterson Office Tower to the thousands of students waiting below. Some balls are marked and are redeemable for prizes from SAB.

This evening, UK is hosting the first Candlelight Ceremony for seniors at 7 p.m. on the Main Building lawn. The Candlelight Ceremony is a chance for graduating students to gather and reflect upon their time at UK. This event will host two guest speakers, both UK alumni. After the presentation, seniors will have a chance to light a candle in memory of their four years at the University of Kentucky and will learn the alma mater. Post-ceremony, seniors can visit UK Alumni Association and individual college alumni associations’ tables to see how they can remain connected to their university after they walk across the stage in their cap and gown. Seniors will also receive a pin to wear at Commencement.

Thursday is time to rock! SAB is excited to host its first off-campus concert at Cosmic Charlie’s. The concert is headlined by Royal Teeth with Wild Party and starts at 8 p.m. The concert is free for UK students (with valid student ID) and $5 for general public. Tickets may be picked up at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m. Cosmic Charlie's will be 18+ for Royal Teeth and Wild Party.

“Legacy Week provides an opportunity for students to enjoy themselves while also making memories at UK that will last a lifetime,” said Micaha Dean, SAB director of traditions. “These events are a great way for seniors to end their time here and a great way for other students to finish out the semester.”

More information about Legacy Week’s events can be found on SAB’s Facebook page.

The Student Activities Board brings more than 100 entertaining, educational and enriching programs that are reflective of contemporary issues and trends to the University of Kentucky annually. These programs are designed to enhance the college experience for students, faculty, staff and the greater Lexington community.
