Lexington Legends Owner Alan Stein Featured at UK Venture Challenge Kickoff Sept. 12

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 10, 2013) — University of Kentucky students will get tips from successful local entrepreneur Alan Stein at the UK Venture Challenge Kickoff, 5-6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in the James. F. Hardymon Theater in the Davis Marksbury Building. The event is open to all UK undergraduate and graduate students who want to learn to be entrepreneurs, and kicks off a monthly workshop series leading up to UK Venture Challenge, March 1, 2014.

“I’m really excited to share some of my experiences with so many bright and accomplished young people,” said Stein, founder, president and CEO of the SteinGroup consulting and investment company, and who also owned and operated multiple sports franchises and facilities across the country including the Lexington Legends. “I always walk away from these dialogues inspired and with great faith that entrepreneurism is alive and well for our future. Truly looking forward to it!”

Students will also hear from past student winners Matt Dierf (undergraduate business concept), David Booth (undergraduate business plan), and TerraCast Technologies’ MBA team members (graduate business plan). They will share experiences and benefits to being involved and competing.

Other workshops will include: student teams and mentors working the business model canvas, networking with the Bluegrass Angels, business plans, intellectual property, funding sources, and past winners’ competition presentations. A practice session is also scheduled in the Hardymon Theater for the students participating in Venture Challenge.

UK Venture Challenge allows students to show off their innovative and entrepreneurial spirit and get real world experience by competing. Undergraduate and graduate teams develop their ideas into potential startup ventures, prepare a written proposal, and pitch their venture to judges from the local entrepreneurial community. The top winning teams ― two undergraduate teams and two graduate teams ― share $3,000 scholarship prizes and advance to the state competition, Idea State U.

The Sept. 12 kickoff event, monthly workshops, and UK Venture Challenge are organized by iNET, the Innovation Network for Entrepreneurial Thinking, with partners the Von Allmen Center for Entrepreneurship and Lexington Innovation & Commercialization Center, and the Big Blue Starters student entrepreneur organization.
