Live at UK, Apollo Duo

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 29, 2014) — The Apollo Duo, a flute and percussion duo, will present new commissioned works as part of their tour stop in the Bluegrass. The duo will take the stage 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, at the University of Kentucky Singletary Center for the Arts Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Apollo Duo is a flute and percussion duo based in Chicago and Minneapolis. The duo formed in 2011 when flutist, Stefanie Abderhalden, and percussionist, Jeremy Johnston, were graduate students at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. The duo began with a performance of music for fife and drum and since then has performed a variety of music for flute and percussion at various venues throughout the Midwest.

The duo strives to perform many styles of music for flute and percussion. Apollo Duo promotes playing new music and works to commission new, innovative pieces written for their combination.

The Apollo Duo has commissioned new works for flute and percussion from composers Jason Cress, Nathan Daughtrey and Danielle Fisher. The premiere performances of these pieces are taking place this month as part of a substantial tour through Minnesota, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee and Oklahoma. Following the completion of this tour, Apollo Duo will record their debut album.

This concert is sponsored by the flute and percussion studios in the UK School of Music at UK College of Fine Arts. The school has garnered a national reputation for high-caliber education in opera, choral and instrumental music performance, as well as music education, composition, and theory and music history.
