Moving Forward Together: Creating a Class on Race and Ethnicity as a Graduation Requirement

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 6, 2016) — As explained in a previous UKNow article, University of Kentucky administrators are working diligently to address five concerns students presented to them in a meeting last November. One of the five concerns the students expressed was that there is no graduation requirement for students to take a class on race and ethnicity.

"A class on race and ethnicity was strongly recommended by the African-American students that came forward to speak. Such a class would serve as a foundation to build learning opportunities that benefit every student on our campus. This recommendation is taken very seriously," said Terry Allen, interim vice president for Institutional Diversity.

To address this concern, a core group will examine in a scholarly way how to address the request for this course in light of the UK Core's original intents and the concern communicated by students and faculty.

This examination will require an exploration and determination of what strategies and core structures may better accomplish the creation of a community of inclusive excellence.

Additionally, a second diversity module in the UK 101/201 curriculum has been developed and is currently being offered this semester. The purpose of these initiatives is to provide the best educational experiences that will improve the campus climate for diversity.

"The University of Kentucky is committed to continuous improvement. It is clearly stated in our vision and strategic objectives. So many work really hard every day to make this happen," Allen said. "We must adhere to the needs of students, and demonstrate a willingness to embrace their feedback on ways to create a more culturally competent environment."
