Nominations Open for Holmes Awards

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 8, 2014) — The UK Women's Forum is seeking the most exceptional women on campus as nominees for the 2014 Sarah Bennett Holmes Award.

The award is granted annually to women working at the university who promote the growth and well-being of other women at UK and/or across the Commonwealth. It brings recognition for efforts that would otherwise go unnoticed through normal channels.

The nomination form is available online. All nominees will be recognized at a luncheon ceremony sponsored by the UK Women's Forum on Thursday, March 6, in the Frank Harris Grand Ballroom of the Student Center. Luncheon reservations will soon be available.

Again this year there will be two awards — one to a woman faculty member and one to a woman staff member. Each award recipient will receive $1,000. Any woman (regular staff or faculty) currently employed by the University of Kentucky is eligible for nomination. The deadline for receipt of all Sarah Bennett Holmes Award nominations is Friday, Jan. 31.

Sarah Bennett Holmes, a distinguished former dean of women at UK, tirelessly championed the rights of women throughout her career. Widowed at a young age, Holmes raised four children while completing her own education. She then began a successful career at UK where she inspired young women to persevere in the face of hardship and pursue their career goals. Among her accomplishments, Holmes developed work programs for women during the depression.

In her honor, the UK Women's Forum created the Sarah Bennett Holmes Award. Since 1994, the annual Sarah Bennett Holmes Award has been bestowed upon female employees who have achieved professional and personal success while promoting the growth and well-being of all women.
