LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 1, 2012) − The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy will be well represented at the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Annual Meeting and Exposition in New Orleans in March when two faculty and one student will receive prestigious awards.

The American Pharmacists Association recently announced that Joseph L. Fink III, professor of pharmacy law and policy, is the recipient of the 2012 Linwood F. Tice Friend of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) Award. He was selected for his dedication to the advancement of student pharmacists and his work with the UK chapter of APhA-ASP.

Formerly known as the APhA Friend of ASP Award, the Linwood F. Tice Friend of APhA-ASP Award was established in 1988 to recognize an individual whose long term services and contributions have benefited the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists.

Fink is also professor of public health in the UK College of Public Health, professor in the Martin School of Public Policy and Administration, a unit he served as acting director during 1998, and professor of clinical leadership and management in the UK College of Health Sciences. Fink also holds appointments as a faculty associate with the UK Appalachian Center, faculty associate with the UK Center on Drug and Alcohol Research, and as a program associate with the UK Program for Bioethics and Patients' Rights

Patricia Freeman, clinical associate professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the UK College of Pharmacy, has been announced as the recipient of the 2012 APhA Good Government Pharmacist-of-the-Year Award. Freeman, a UK pharmacy alumnus and director of the College's Center for the Advancement of Pharmacy Practice, was selected for her legislative and grassroots advocacy work, helping to ensure Kentucky pharmacists were authorized to administer immunizations, as well as her work with the Kentucky Medicaid Drug Management Review Advisory Board (DMRAB).

The Good Government Pharmacist-of-the-Year Award, established in 1990, recognizes an individual pharmacist who actively contributes to the community through his or her involvement in the political process.

Freeman is also a part-time clinical pharmacist at the Frankfort Regional Medical Center in Frankfort, Ky., and in addition to the APhA, is a member of numerous professional organizations, including American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, National Community Pharmacists Association, Kentucky Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and the Kentucky Pharmacists Association. She has been awarded several honors and awards, including the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Medallion at UK; the Professional Promotion Award and Innovative Pharmacist of the Year awards by the Kentucky Pharmacists Association; and Preceptor of the Year by the UK College of Pharmacy.

Kelley L. Ratermann, a third-year Pharm.D. student from Tipp City, Ohio, is one of four students in the nation to receive the 2012 APhA Student Leadership Award. The award will recognize Ratermann for her outstanding academic achievement and leadership ability.

The APhA Student Leadership award was established in 1983 to honor students for their work both inside and outside the classroom. Ratermann, who received her undergraduate education at UK as well, is president of UK's APhA-ASP chapter. She also is a member of the following organizations: Kentucky Pharmacists Association, Kentucky Alliance of Pharmacy Students, and Phi Lambda Sigma, among others. In addition, she was the only pharmacy student in the nation to receive the prestigious Carl Emswiller Summer Internship last year in association management from APhA.

The American Pharmacists Association represents more than 62,000 practicing pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, student pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and others interested in advancing the profession. APhA is the first-established and largest association of pharmacists in the United States.
