Quality of Life Award Recognizes Service

LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 13, 2012) — Miss Kentucky hopeful Brooke Powell has been chosen to receive the 2012 Quality of Life Award, in recognition of her dedication to community service.

                                                     

Presented by the Miss Kentucky Scholarship Organization in partnership with the University of Kentucky Office of Community Engagement, the Quality of Life Award is given to a young woman who has excelled in her commitment to enhancing the quality of life for others through volunteerism and community service, said Lisa Higgins-Hord, UK's assistant vice president for community engagement.

"We are proud to be a partner with the Miss Kentucky Scholarship Organization this year as we honor and recognize Miss Powell for her commitment to engaging in service in our Commonwealth with a cause she has not only chosen to give a voice to but developed a meaningful project impacting those affected," Higgins-Hord said.

Powell, 18, is Miss Belle of Louisville and a broadcast journalism major at Western Kentucky University.

 
Four other contestants in the 2012 Miss Kentucky Pageant were named as finalists for the award. Ramsey Carpenter, 21, Miss University of Kentucky and a special education major at UK, was named first runner-up. Jenna Day, 20, Miss Louisville and a political science and vocal performance major at UK, was named second runner-up. Mira Roxanne Baker, 23, Miss Mammoth Cave Area and a political science graduate of Georgetown College received an honorable mention, as did Kiley Brennan Shuffett, 21, Miss My Old Kentucky Home and a Spanish major at UK.
