Re-shape Your Response to Violence

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 3, 2014) — Have you ever experienced a flash of sorrow and anger when you hear of another case of violence in our community?

You aren’t alone. There are many out there who feel overwhelmed by those helpless emotions. But now there is something any university employee can do for the campus community.

The University of Kentucky Violence Intervention and Prevention Center (VIP Center) is hosting a free training session for any faculty or staff member who wants to take those feelings and formulate a different response, said Rhonda Henry, intervention program coordinator for the VIP Center.

The VIP Center is hosting “Shaping a Violence-free Campus: The Role of Faculty and Staff,” a free, one-day training session from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, focused on how staff and faculty can play a vital role in shaping a violence-free campus. A panel, including representatives from the Dean of Students, the Community of Concern program, UK Police Department and the Office of Institutional Equity and Equal Opportunity. The free event will be in 206 Student Center. Luncheon will be served.

“Participants can learn about how violence affects our campus community,” Henry said.

Attendees will learn to recognize the red flags of someone in need of help while they also learn the skills and resources needed to make a positive impact.

While the event is free to UK employees, please reserve your seat before 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6 by registering at the VIP Center or https://uky.az1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_8dm2NrUlUolzN6R
