Ring in the Holidays With UK Fine Arts

Published: Nov 27, 2013

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 27, 2013) — From the art studio to the stage, students in the University of Kentucky College of Fine Arts are ringing in the holiday season with classic offerings to a new production of a beloved Christmas story. With Open Studio"Collage" and "A Christmas Carol," there is something sure to fill the needs and warm hearts around the Bluegrass Dec. 5-8 on the UK campus.

UK Theatre Stages Holiday Classic ‘A Christmas Carol’

UK Department of Theatre heaps up a hearty helping of nostalgia with a sprinkling of the supernatural from Charles Dickens. Contemptible miser Ebenezer Scrooge is fulfilled by his wealthy, yet lonely existence, until he receives a message on Christmas Eve from the ghost of his deceased partner, Jacob Marley.

Scrooge will face his past, present and future with three spirits. Will the apparitions and their prophecies transform Scrooge? Will he find that there is still compassion and love in his heart? On Christmas morning, humbug meets its maker.

UK Theatre will stage "A Christmas Carol" 7:30 p.m., Dec. 5-7, and 2 p.m., Dec. 7-8, at the Guignol Theatre, in the Fine Arts Building. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for general admission. Advance tickets can be purchased at the Singletary Center Ticket Office, by calling 859-257-4929, by visiting www.scfatickets.com, or in person. Tickets can also be purchased in person at Guignol Theatre before the production.

Open Studio Decks the Halls with UK Students' Artwork

On Friday, Dec. 6, UK School of Art and Visual Studies opens its doors to the public. The popular annual event gives the community an opportunity to discover and celebrate UK's talented young visual artists.

Lots of artwork from undergraduates, graduates and even faculty will be on display including metalwork, fiber, paintings, photographs, drawings, ceramics, plaster casts, printmaking and woodwork.  In addition, much of the student and faculty artists' work can also be purchased in time for the gift-giving season. The event will also feature some art demonstrations.

Open Studio includes the Carey Ellis Juried Student Show, featuring UK students' best work over the last year. To round out the festivities there will be live music, food and drinks.

Check out Open Studio from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at Reynolds Building #1. The event is free and open to the public, but a $5 donation is suggested.

To finish off your celebrations, don't miss the UK Choirs' most popular concert of the year, "Collage." A local holiday tradition, the concerts feature some of the season's most treasured carols from around the world.

In addition to the more than 200 choral talents filling the stage, "Collage" also features some of the school's most celebrated musicians and Lexington's best musical talents.

The curtain rises on "Collage" 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Singletary Center for the Arts Concert Hall. Tickets are $24 for general admission, $13 for children and UK students with a valid student ID, and $18 each for groups of more than 10.
