LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 1, 2012) – The Student Activities Board has announced J. Cole and Gym Class Heroes as the headliners for the 2012 Spring Concert 8 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in Memorial Coliseum. This event is sponsored by the Student Activities Board.

J. Cole, a 2012 Grammy nominee for Best New Artist, has been a refreshing addition to the charts. He made his presence known with chart topping hits such as "Work Out," "Can’t Get Enough" and "Mr. Nice Watch" featuring his label executive and mentor Jay-Z. The 24-year-old North Carolina native, born Jermaine Cole, was the first artist signed to Jay-Z’s new Roc Nation label. Cole has been able to distinguish himself from the others with a scholarly approach to the game – which is not surprising considering his magna cum laude honor after graduating from St. John’s University.

Soulful and strong, J. Cole’s recent album, "Cole World: The Sideline Story," makes him one to watch.  Cole even managed a coveted guest verse on Jay-Z’s "Blueprint 3" with “A Star is Born.”  Cole’s lyrics touch on everything from his upbringing in North Carolina to the poverty and hopelessness that affects his community. He gets personal in "Cole World." Tracks on the album reflect struggles with being an up and coming artist, tensions with his father and partner infidelity. J. Cole’s debut album has many convinced he’ll be taking over the game in no time at all.

Gym Class Heroes are not newcomers to the music scene. With hits such as "Stereo Hearts," "Cupids Chokehold" and "Clothes Off," they mix elements of rap, rock, R&B and funk into one cohesive and melodic sound. The upstate New York natives have diverse appeal, and their music does not fit comfortably into one specific genre.

The band formed in upstate New York when Travis ‘Travie’ McCoy and drummer Matt McGinley became friends during high-school gym class. The duo set out to create a new genre of hip-hop. After the addition of guitarist Milo Bonacci and bassist Ryan Giese, Gym Class Heroes was officially born. The guys' self-released album "For the Kids" was released the same year. Since then, the band has had four chart topping records including "The Quilt" in 2008 which included guest appearances by Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes and Daryl Hall. Lead singer McCoy released his solo album "Lazarus" in 2009. And in 2011 ,Gym Class Heroes came together in the studio with the release of "Papercut Chronicles II," a sequel to their 2003 label debut.
