Saha Cardiovascular Awards Honor Medical and Nursing Students

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 28, 2011) —  The winners have been announced for the 2011 Saha Cardiovascular Awards. These awards provide financial support to medicine and nursing students, as well as an outstanding patient educator. One medical student, two nursing students and two outstanding patient educators have been recognized for their dedication to cardiovascular medicine, nursing and education. Each award comes with $1,000 in financial support and recognition at the 14th annual Gill Heart Institute Cardiovascular Research Day, to be held Oct. 21 in Lexington.

Scott Silva is the recipient of the Medical Student Award, for a medical student currently enrolled at the University of Kentucky, who has an interest in cardiology or cardiovascular surgery innovation.

Richard Eckerle and Preston Lewis are the recipients of the Nursing Student Awards, presented to nursing students who display an interest in cardiac nursing.

The Paula Fritz R.N. Patient Education Award goes to joint recipients Terry Altpeter and Leslie Combs. This award honors an individual or team who presents a new project or approach to patient education in a cardiovascular population, implemented within the last two years.
