Search Begins for Funniest UK Student

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 31, 2011) – The Cats Den in the University of Kentucky Student Center offers students a week filled with events ranging from the serious to the hilarious.

A recent National Geographic poll taken in the nation’s capital found that “48 percent of young Americans believe the majority population in India is Muslim.” (It's Hindu, by a landslide.) This statistic isn't surprising when the survey went on to say that about half of young Americans couldn't find the state of New York on a map. On Monday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m., the Cats Den will host a forum called Cultural Tolerance: Reading Beyond the Headlines. Come hear from fellow students and organizations on campus about prejudices they face both at the university and in Kentucky. These religious and international organizations will explain who they are, the stereotypes they face and all the little things the media does not tell us

On Wednesday, Feb. 2, at 8 p.m. Comedy Caravan features Lawrence Thomas. Thomas describes himself as “America’s Hottest Fat Guy.” Yes, his website actually says that. However, Thomas is more than that. He is loud and goofy and loves to make people laugh. His sense of humor has been likened to spending a day with your favorite cousin, only funnier. He is fast paced, brutally honest, and breaks down life’s troubles like no one else can. Even his stage performance is like watching a hurricane make landfall. With a hilarious personality, it is no wonder that Lawrence Thomas has a loyal following.

If you would rather be on the stage than in the audience, try your hand at making audiences laugh at Amateur Comedy Night. On Thursday, Feb. 3, at 8 p.m. you are welcomed to join Comedy Caravan’s Steve Pearce as he sets out on a journey to find the funniest student at UK. All you have to do is show up and tell Steve you want to test out your funny lines. Participants will have the chance to receive what Steve calls the “Most Awesome Prizes to Ever Hit the Universe.” Plus, the winner will receive the title of Funniest Person on Campus.

The Cat’s Den is located on the first floor of the University of Kentucky’s Student Center. All of the events hosted by the Cats Den are free of charge to students, staff, and faculty. For more information contact catsdenuk@gmail.com. These events are sponsored by the Student Center Director’s Office.
