POSTPONED: Kentucky Secretary of State Talk Postponed Due to Weather

This event has been postponed due to inclement weather. More information will be available once it is rescheduled.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 20, 2016) — Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes will speak this Friday, Jan. 22, on campus as part of an election law symposium hosted by the University of Kentucky College of Law and Kentucky Law Journal.

Secretary Grimes will speak at a noon luncheon at the Hilary J. Boone Center. Seating is limited but anyone interested in attending can register by emailing Joshua Douglas at joshuadouglas@uky.edu or Mark Roth at meroth38@gmail.com.

Secretary Grimes is Kentucky's 76th secretary of state and only current elected female constitutional officer. She is Kentucky's chief election official and the filing official for all candidates seeking an office to be voted for by the electors of more than one county, members of Congress, members of the General Assembly and of the Court of Justice. Secretary Grimes certifies candidates for those offices to be printed on the ballots, and vote totals for those offices are certified to the secretary of state by the respective county clerks.

The secretary of state also serves as chair of the State Board of Elections, an independent agency that administers the Commonwealth's election laws, disseminates administrative regulations necessary to properly carry out its duties, supervises the registration and purgation of voters, appoints political party representatives to the 120 county boards of elections and certifies the official election results.

The election law symposium, beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
