Seminar to Support Autism Service-Care Providers

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 14, 2012) — The Human Development Institute at the University of Kentucky will present a seminar designed to help clinical and educational service care providers who assist individuals with autism.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is estimated to occur in one out of every 88 individuals, according to latest reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This seminar is designed to give participants information about the meaning of the “spectrum” of ASD, including the range of definitions and characteristics to utilize in assessments.

In addition, the seminar will outline the need for effective clinical and family-based interventions for this population, and enable the professional practitioner, educator or parent to base therapy and social skill training on evidence-based practices for individuals with ASD.

Specifically, the seminar will offer related clinical and education human service care providers and parents with practical strategies they can use in the home, school, and community to assist individuals with ASD across the life-span.

Presenters will be Vicki Knight and Amy Spriggs, both assistant professors of special education in the UK College of Education.

"Behavioral and Learning Strategies for Individuals across the Lifespan with Autism Spectrum Disorder" will be presented from 1-3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, in the Human Development Training Room of UK's Coldstream Research Campus, at 1525 Bull Lea Road, in Lexington. Those interested may download a printable PDF of the seminar flyer.

Video-conference sites will be available around the city and at locations throughout state for parents, professionals and educators to participate. The conference room in the Mineral Industries Building offers a nearby location where UK students may register to attend this seminar.
