Service-Learning Workshops Open to Campus Community

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 4, 2012) — The University of Kentucky campus community is invited to attend a series of interactive workshops on service-learning  Oct. 22-23,  hosted by renowned scholar Barbara Jacoby from the University of Maryland.

Jacoby is faculty associate for leadership and community service-learning at the Adele H. Stamp Student Union – Center for Campus Life at the University of Maryland, College Park. In this role, she facilitates initiatives involving service-learning, civic engagement and academic partnerships.  Jacoby has served as Campus Compact's Engaged Scholar for Professional Development and has authored six publications, including the foundational texts "Service-Learning in Higher Education" and "Building Partnerships for Service-Learning."

Jacoby will host four different  workshops, each themed and targeted to a specific audience. Participants will expand their knowledge and understanding of service-learning, whatever their level of experience or expertise. All workshops are free and open to interested UK faculty, staff, students, and community partners on a first-come, first-served basis. You may choose to attend one or more of the workshops below.

  1. "Getting Started with Service-Learning" is geared toward faculty and staff, and will take place from 1-2:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in Room 206 of the UK Student Center.       
  2. "Developing Engaging Partnerships" is geared toward faculty, staff and community partners, and will take place from 3-5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in Room 206 of the UK Student Center.
  3. "Becoming a Service-Learning Leader" is geared toward students and will take place from 5:30-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in Room 106 of the UK Student Center. Dinner will be provided at no cost to participants.
  4. "Enhancing and Sharing Your Service-Learning Experience" is geared toward faculty and staff, and will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Oct. 23, in Room 206 of the UK Student Center. Participants are encouraged to bring their service-learning syllabus. 

These workshops are sponsored by UK's Office of Community Engagement, in partnership with the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching, the Office of Student Involvement and Endowed Professor for Service-Learning Katherine McCormick.
