Spring Blooms Early at UK Art Museum
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 23, 2012) − Don’t miss the opportunity to see the Art Museum at the University of Kentucky in full bloom with flowers and fine art for its premier fundraiser, "Art in Bloom 2012." In its 12th year, this three-day event will deck out the museum in floral delights presented by 50 designers. The floral creations are inspired by art from the museum’s permanent collection and those featured in the special exhibition "RICHARD BELL: Uz Vs. Them." "Art in Bloom 2012" takes over the museum Feb. 24-26.
This year "Art in Bloom" will be presented in honor of Isabel Yates, former vice mayor of Lexington, for her long-time support of the museum. The event will also celebrate the artwork of signature artist, Mary Seymour Neely, a local painter.
As a graduate of the University of South Carolina, Isabel Yates, earned a master’s degree in English from Ohio State University and did post graduate work in counseling at UK. While a South Carolina native, she has called Lexington, her home for more than 40 years. Yates spent more than a decade as a city council representative for Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, during which time she spent three years as vice mayor. Yates currently serves on the board of the Hellenic Ideals Program of the Bluegrass.
Neely, who grew up in the Cherokee Park area of Louisville, Ky., credits her basic art skills and desire to pursue a career in painting to artist Lucy Diecks, a longtime instructor at Atherton High School and the University of Louisville. For the past 15 summers, she has continued her art studies in France. Neely, who has also studied at the Dayton Art Institute and the University of Michigan, holds a bachelor's degree in education from UK. The artist currently resides in Lexington and maintains a studio in the Artist's Attic at Victorian Square.
The public is invited to take in "Art in Bloom 2012" from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, through Sunday, Feb. 26. The cost of admission is $5. As an added bonus, on Sunday local artists, including Neely, will set up their easels in the museum to paint what floral designs inspire them.
Additionally, the museum will host several other fundraising activities in conjunction with "Art in Bloom 2012." Among these is a black-tie gala, dinner and live auction in honor of all the sponsors who make the exhibition possible. The live auction will allow one to bid on items such as pieces of art, vacations, and handmade jewelry. The dinner is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24. Tickets for the gala are available in sponsor packages that range from $500-$1,000.
The museum will also present "A Night on the Town Cocktail Reception" and silent auction beginning at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25. Tickets for this event are $100 per person or $75 for those under 40. The silent auction is available to all ticketed guests until 9:30 p.m.
