Spring into the Rasdall Gallery for Great Exhibits

of

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 3, 2011)  The Student Activities Board (SAB) has a full schedule of wonderful art exhibits coming to the Rasdall Gallery during the 2011 Spring semester from the University of Kentucky and Lexington artists.

Currently on display is the UK College of Design Exhibit. This exhibit features some of the best work from the Fall 2010 semester made by UK College of Design students. Students wanted to see more student art exhibited in the Rasdall Gallery and the Student Activities Board responded to these requests.

Amanda Rambo, director of the SAB Cultural Arts Committee, said, “It's important to recognize the talent we have in our own backyard and to give these students the opportunity to exhibit their work in a professional setting.”

The exhibit takes place now through March 10.

Following the College of Design Exhibit is the Waseem Touma Exhibit, which showcases installation artwork from the UK alumnus. Installation art is a type of three-dimensional artwork that is designed to transform a viewer’s perception of interior space. Raised in Australia with Lebanese family influence, his works reference the need for cultural identity and focuses on what we, as people, have in common instead of what makes us different.

Touma attended UK from 2003 to 2005 where he worked with the artist-in-residency program at UK’s Martin Luther King Jr. Cultural Center and he was the president of the Art Graduate Student Association. The exhibit takes place from March 22 through April 14 with a reception on March 22 from noon to 4:30 p.m. Free refreshments will be served.

The final exhibit of the semester is the annual Student. Teacher. Student. Exhibit. This exhibit will showcase work from College of Education students who are currently student teaching and artwork from Fayette County Public Schools elementary and middle school students.

“It's a celebration of the childhood creativity and wonder that we always hold in our hearts, even as we become older," said Rambo.

This exhibit takes place from April 18 to April 29 with a free reception on April 18 from 5 – 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

The Rasdall Gallery is located in the Student Center, in the Great Hall around the corner from Student Center Ticket Office. The Rasdall Gallery is open weekdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Student Activities Board’s Cultural Arts Committee brings art exhibits throughout the school year to the Rasdall Gallery. Artists range from national to local and include speakers. Past events have included Frank Warren from PostSecret, Smithsonian artist Lori Gordon, street artist Shepard Fairey and Lego sculptures.

The Student Activities Board (SAB) brings more than 100 events to the University of Kentucky annually that enhance the college experience by providing students, other members of the campus and the Lexington community with entertaining, educational or enriching programs that are reflective of contemporary issues and trends.
