Student Entrepreneurs: Turn Your Idea Into a Startup Company

of
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct 10, 2012) — Student entrepreneurs will learn about the "business model canvas" and plans for the 2013 University of Kentucky Venture Challenge from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 13, in the Ralph. G. Anderson Engineering Building Student Commons.

The business model canvas, based on a concept first elaborated by international speaker, author and business-model innovator Alex Osterwalder, is a tool students can use to develop their ideas into a startup company.

The event, organized by iNET, the Innovation Network for Entrepreneurial Thinking, will feature iNET Academic Director Derek Lane and Entrepreneur in Residence Brian Raney. Lane will present the nine building blocks of a business model canvas. Raney will talk about the 2013 UK Venture Challenge business competition, scheduled for Feb. 16.

The Venture Challenge is open to undergraduate and graduate student teams who can enter in either of two categories, business concept or business plan. Students compete before a panel of judges for prize money and the opportunity to advance to the state competition, Idea State U. Written entries are due Jan. 28. Students will also have the opportunity to connect with coaches and begin working with their teams.

iNET partners for the Oct. 13 event include the Big Blue Starters, the Von Allmen Center for Entrepreneurship and the Lexington Innovation and Commercialization Center.
