LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 17, 2013) — Having just celebrated the May Commencement Ceremonies for the class of 2013, the University of Kentucky is preparing to welcome the newest group of Wildcats: the class of 2017 at this summer's advising conferences.
Summer advising conferences allow incoming students to meet with campus offices and organizations, speak with academic advisors, meet other students and register for classes. By registering for advising conferences, students are notifying the Office of Undergraduate Admission of their intention to attend UK.
"The Summer Advising Conferences exist to provide a welcoming and informative introduction and orientation to UK, so incoming students will have a positive transition in the fall," Don Witt, associate provost for enrollment management, said. "The conferences reflect the collaborative efforts of many areas across the University of Kentucky campus."
Twelve conferences this summer are welcoming incoming freshmen, three more focused solely for transfer students and an additional pair of conferences for readmission students. The two-day conferences, which begin June 17 and run through July 12, will allow students to get a sneak peak of all the opportunities available to them as a student of the university.
"Students that come to these conferences will be introduced to various aspects of UK that will help them become more successful, and which make UK stand out," Witt said. "Representatives from across the academic and student affairs areas will be there to showcase their services and support, and to show these incoming students the various ways they can connect with the university."
Representatives from a number of different on-campus organizations will be on-hand throughout the conferences to promote their role at the university and answer any questions incoming students may have. A number of information sessions will also be held to answer questions on topics such as Greek life, financial aid, parking and transportation, football and basketball tickets, education abroad and much more.
The Summer Advising Conferences also provide a chance for new students to interact with Wildcat Assistants who staff these events. The Wildcat Assistants are made up of 20 currently enrolled students in a variety of majors and from locations around the state, country and world.
"Our hope is that any student that comes to UK for an advising conference has the opportunity to engage with a current student and learn about the different organizations and avenues to get involved both academically and socially at UK,” said Stephen Barnett, associate director of admissions and associate registrar.
The first day of the conference will conclude with an optional tour of downtown Lexington followed by an ice cream social at the Hilary J. Boone Center.
"This event provides a chance for our newest members of the Wildcat family to get acquainted with their fellow students, faculty, staff, as well as what the campus itself offers." Witt said.
Students will finish the conference by meeting their academic advisor for the first time, who will assist them in registering for their first semester of classes.
The goal of the conferences may be to prepare students for when they arrive for K Week in the fall, but it is the personal touch of the conferences that brings it all together.
"The best part of the conferences really is the opportunity to meet all of the new students and their friends and families," Witt said. "Everyone is so excited to start the next chapter in their life - and we are pleased to be able to share their enthusiasm!"
Because the conferences are open on a first-come, first-served basis, students are encouraged to confirm as early as possible.
