Together at the Drive In

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 13, 2012) — All the classic goodness of an old-school drive-in is coming to campus at "Together at the Drive In" from 7-11 p.m. Saturday, April 14, in the green lot at Commonwealth Stadium. This event is free and is sponsored by the Student Activities Board.

Together at the Drive In will be playing a double-feature of two classic films, "Grease" followed by "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Free cotton candy and popcorn will be given out to students while supplies last. Don’t have a car? No problem! Bring a blanket and catch the flicks in the front row near the big screen.

"Grease" is a 1978 musical about an Australian teenager named Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) who meets American teen Danny Zuko (John Travolta) and falls in love during the summer at the beach. Sandy is heartbroken when she has to return home for the summer until her parents decide to stay in America and she winds up attending the same school as Danny. Danny is not the same boy she fell in love with during the summer at the beach and Sandy and her gang of ‘Pink Ladies’ try to win over Danny and his crew called the T-Birds.

"Raiders of the Lost Ark" is a 1981 action-adventure film featuring adventurer Indiana Jones directed by Steven Spielberg. Archaeologist Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is hired by the U.S. government to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis. As classic Indiana Jones films do, the hero finds himself in all sorts of dangers while trying to save the day and complete his task.

“‘Drive-in double features are often associated with the past, especially with the 1950s and 1960s but it will be fun for students to experience a classic drive-in experience while watching two very classic films for free,” said SAB Cinema Committee Director Brandon Payne.

The Student Activities Board brings more than 100 entertaining, educational and enriching programs that are reflective of contemporary issues and trends to the University of Kentucky annually. These programs are designed to enhance the college experience for students, faculty, staff and the greater Lexington community.
