Tucker Foundation Names UK Opera Program to Top 20
LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 22, 2011) − University of Kentucky Opera Theatre was recently named to the Top 20 list of recommended U.S. opera training programs suggested by the Richard Tucker Music Foundation.
The Tucker Foundation is a nonprofit cultural organization dedicated to the support and advancement of the careers of talented American opera singers by bringing opera into the community and heightening appreciation for opera by supporting music education enrichment programs.
"We feel that we have a world-class opera program here, and we have always had as our goal to be the best training program for young singers in the country. We have incredibly talented young artists in the program, and a faculty that ranks at the very top in the country," says Everett McCorvey, director of the UK Opera Theatre.
UK Opera Theatre began in 1955 under the direction of voice teacher Phyllis Jenness and Phillip Miller, director of the UK Symphony Orchestra. Since then, it has risen to its position today as one of the leading opera programs in North America under the direction of McCorvey. In recent years, vocalists from the program have performed at the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, San Francisco Opera, Kennedy Center, Houston Grand Opera, Chicago Lyric, Dicapo Opera, as well as many of the opera stages in Europe including Berlin, Wiesbaden, Dresden, Bremen, Graz, Toulouse, Dublin, Bordeaux, Florence and other opera houses throughout the world. Last fall, vocalists from the program were featured during the opening and closing ceremonies of the Alltech FEI 2010 World Equestrian Games.
UK Opera Theatre has collaborated with the San Francisco Opera's Merola Program to present and record the world premiere of Thomas Pasatieri's "The Hotel Casablanca" on Albany Records. UK Opera Theatre's other collegiate world premieres include Andre Previn’s "A Street Car Named Desire," Rachel Portman’s "The Little Prince" and Joseph Baber’s "River of Time," the story of Abraham Lincoln's boyhood in Kentucky. Most recently, UK Opera’s young artists recorded for Albany Records the only English version available of Johann Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus.” In 2010, the program received a rave review for the world premiere of Pasatieri’s "God Bless Us Every One," produced with Dicapo Opera Theatre in New York City. A world premiere recording of the holiday opera followed in March.
Several alumni from UK Opera Theatre have gone on to perform on world stages including tenors Gregory Turay, Judd Perry, Beau Gibson and Chad Johnson, and sopranos Patricia Andress, Jennifer Fair and Jennifer Sgroe. Other well-known graduates of the program include Broadway talent agent Chase Jennings and actress Reshma Shetty, star of the television show "Royal Pains," to name a few.
UK Opera Theatre is one of several acclaimed programs housed at the award-winning UK School of Music in the UK College of Fine Arts.
