UK 2015 Global Health Case Competition Registration Now Open Until Dec. 1

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 24, 2015) — The University of Kentucky Global Health Initiative has opened registration for its second annual Global Health Case Competition, which will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 23, 2016, at the UK College of Pharmacy. Registration will close at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2015.

Interdisciplinary student teams will develop strategies to address a critical global health challenge scenario during the Global Health Case Competition. The case will not be released until the week of the competition.

Graduate and undergraduate students enrolled at UK are invited to participate. Teams should comprise four to six students and at least three schools should be represented. After registration, students will be selected and randomly assigned to teams. Students who wish to participate may come from any UK college, but experience or interest in global health is crucial.

“This will be a fantastic opportunity for students to test their skills and intuition in solving health problems, to meet and work with students from across the entire university campus, and to interact with faculty with similar interests,” said Dr. Samuel Matheny, assistant provost for Global Health Initiative.

The student teams will present their strategies to a panel of judges Jan. 23, 2016. Each team will have 15 minutes to give a presentation, followed by a 10-minute question-and-answer portion with the judges.

One team will be chosen to advance to the 2016 International Emory Global Health Case Competition, which will take place April 8-9, 2016 at Emory University. There, the winning UK team will face teams from 24 other universities, who will converge to learn about, develop, and recommend innovative solutions for the 21st century global health posed problem. The first-place team at the Emory competition will win $6,000.

The UK Global Health Case Competition is organized by the Global Health Initiative, whose mission is to advance research and educational programs for students to improve the health of people throughout the world.
