UK Alumni Take Their Percussion Talents on Tour
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 15, 2013) — University of Kentucky alumni and percussionists Glenn Kotche and Colin Campbell are taking their talents on the Radiolab tour with Kotche’s band, On Fillmore. Campbell will be subbing in Kotche’s place for a few performances. The tour, which began Nov. 12, runs through Dec. 2.
On Fillmore, the acoustic upright bass and percussion duo featuring bassist Darin Gray and drummer Glenn Kotche, was formed after the two performed together with experimental rock musician and producer Jim O’Rourke in the summer of 2000. On Fillmore has released four full-length albums, including its most recent release "Extended Vacation" on Austin-based label Dead Oceans.
Best known as the drummer of the popular alternative rock band Wilco, Kotche is a highly trained percussionist and composer. His exploration of rhythm and space began in childhood in Roselle, Ill., and eventually landed him in UK School of Music’s acclaimed Percussion Studies Program, from which he graduated in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in music performance.
Since graduation from UK, Kotche’s various stints with groups and ensembles have resulted in participation on more than 90 recordings. Kotche was also presented the Distinguished Alumni Award from UK College of Fine Arts in 2007.
Chicago-based percussionist Colin Campbell discovered drumming at age 12. He attributes his interest and talent in drumming to his mother and father, percussionist James Campbell, professor and director of UK Percussion Studies. Campbell, who earned his bachelor's degree in music at UK and a master's degree from University of Michigan, enjoys collecting all manners of percussive paraphernalia.
Campbell, who is sponsored by Innovative Percussion, is a founding member of DIY-psych-lofi-ghostcore-post-psych-power-basement-rock trio Le Tour. He can also be seen performing with Del Moroccos, as well as country-western outfit Cpt. Captain.
