UK Cardiothoracic Surgeon Named 2011 Lung Health Champion

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 21, 2011) - Dr. Sibu Saha, cardiothoracic surgeon at UK, was recently recognized for his lifelong contributions to the fight against lung disease by being named the recipient of the 2011 Lung Health Champion Award from the American Lung Association in Kentucky.

The award was presented during the 11th Annual Breath of Life Gala on Nov. 4.

"Dr. Saha epitomizes the American Lung Association's mission to improve lung health and prevent lung disease," a release from the American Lung Association in Kentucky said. "We appreciate all that he has done and will do for our cause in the future."

A volunteer with the American Lung Association for more than 25 years, Dr. Saha has published more than 100 articles, scientific exhibits and posters. His research interests include atherosclerosis, cartoid atherosclerosis and transmyocardial revascularization with laser.

After a career in private practice, Dr. Saha joined the faculty of the UK College of Medicine in 2002 as a professor of surgery. He maintains an active surgery schedule and also travels to Eastern Kentucky to conduct outreach clinics. He mentors surgical residents and medical students and currently serves as the chair of the Gill Heart Institute Director's Council. He has called Kentucky his home since 1976.
