UK Classes Canceled Tuesday, Feb. 17

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 17, 2015)  Classes at the University of Kentucky are canceled Tuesday, Feb. 17, and only Plan B (essential) employees are required to report to work. Due to a state of emergency being declared in Kentucky because of severe weather conditions, the University of Kentucky has made the decision to cancel all classes Tuesday and close offices including UK HealthCare Clinics.

Clinics that will be closed include UK’s Kentucky Clinic, University Health Service and all other outpatient clinics. However, UK hospitals, including Chandler and Good Samaritan, will remain open per normal conditions. Due to University Health Service being closed Tuesday, students who have emergent needs should go to the Emergency Department at UK Chandler Hospital or Good Samaritan Hospital or call the UHS physician on call at 859-323-5324.

Citing the state of emergency declared by Gov. Steve Beshear and the prospect of continued inclement weather, University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto announced the closure.

“Safety is always our top priority,” Capilouto said in announcing the decision. “After reviewing the continued prospects for weather as well as the conditions that exist in the community and on campus, we have decided to close tomorrow. That will, in turn, also give our facilities and safety officials more time to prepare for operations the rest of the week during what will continue to be challenging conditions.”

UK Police, emergency management and facilities crews will continue to work on extended shifts to keep the campus as clear as possible and to prepare for the rest of the week.

Dining and housing operations will continue. A schedule for dining operations that will be open can be found at http://www.uky.campusdish.com.

"I want to thank the hundreds of employees in physical plant, UK HealthCare, housing, dining, law enforcement, emergency management, parking and transportation, public relations, UK Athletics, and other units who are working around the clock to keep our students safe, care for our patients, and return our campus to full function,” Capilouto said. "It is a remarkable effort.”

From UK Fire Marshal Greg Williamson

Due to the expected extreme cold weather, the University of Kentucky Fire Marshal’s Office is asking everyone to use extreme caution in the use of secondary heat sources, e.g., space heaters.

In an office setting, it is required that the secondary heat source be attended at all times during use.  The secondary heat source must also have an automatic shut off if tipped over, and be at least three feet away from any combustibles.  In other words, DO NOT use it near anything that will burn.

Be advised that secondary heat sources are not permitted in any UK Residence Hall. Report any severely cold conditions to the front desk or residence hall staff.
