UK Health Colleges to Hold Interprofessional Training

of

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 22, 2012) − Physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other health care professionals often take an interdisciplinary approach to health care at the University of Kentucky in an effort to provide the most comprehensive quality care to its patients.

UK students from the colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy are currently participating in a series of interprofessional education seminars as they train to become more efficient members of an interdisciplinary health care team.

During the next two weeks, students will participate in sessions that include:

  • Standardized patient sessions related to a patient presenting to the emergency department that included discussion and documentation.

  • Facilitated debriefing sessions with a practicing physician, pharmacist, or nurse. During the debriefing, the team will watch the previous patient session and discuss areas of success and areas of improvement in terms of team dynamics and team communication.

UK's goal in interprofessional education is to teach systems-based, holistic decision-making by empowering students with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and experience necessary to enable them to solve complex problems and address issues that surpass the scope of any one profession.
