UK Hosts Statewide Cardiology Meeting

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 20, 2011) — The University of Kentucky and UK HealthCare will host the annual meeting of the Kentucky Chapter of the American College of Cardiology. The event, a gathering of cardiology professionals from across the Commonwealth, will take place at UK Chandler Hospital on Oct. 22.

The program is designed for physicians or other practitioners in the field of cardiology, and will feature an emphasis on current practice trends within cardiovascular medicine.

A day-long event, the meeting will begin with a scientific poster display by fellows and medical residents from UK and the University of Louisville. Dr. David Holmes, current present of the ACC, will present a guest lecture on left atrial appendange occlusion. Other topics to be covered by panels of experts throughout the day include: mitral regurgitation, aortic insufficiency and pulmonary regurgitation.

During lunch, the Honorable Maestra Award will be presented to Dr. Jacqueline Noonan, a longtime UK HealthCare pediatric cardiologist. Noonan will be honored for more than 50 years of service to the field of cardiology in Kentucky, for her contributions to medicine including the identification of Noonan Syndrome and for teaching generations of rising cardiologists. The Young Investigator Award will also be presented during lunch.

The last presentation of the day will be the "FIT Lecture: Choosing Between, and How to Succeed in, Academic vs. Private Practice." The lecture will be presented by Dr. Alison Bailey, assistant professor of medicine and director of the Cardio Rehabilitation Program for the UK HealthCare Gill Heart Institute, and Dr. Bart Dawson of Norton Healthcare in Louisville.
 

Opening and closing remarks will be provided by Dr. Juan Villafañe, current Kentucky ACC president. 

The Kentucky ACC meeting will follow on the heels of the 2011 Gill Heart Institute Cardiovascular Research Day, to be held Oct. 21 in Lexington.
