UK Leave Benefits Expanded

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 2, 2011) -- University of Kentucky temporary disability (sick) leave and funeral leave benefits have been broadened to include coverage of additional relationships. Below is a summary of related updates to Human Resources Policy & Procedure (HRP&P).   

HRP&P #82.0 Temporary Disability ( http://www.uky.edu/HR/policies/hrpp082.html ) -- Basic changes include the following:

  • Expanded the definition of family member to include:
    • Aunt/uncle (includes relationships created by marriage)
    • Niece/nephew (includes relationships created by marriage)
    • Other persons with whom the employee has a “loco parentis” relationship
    • Parent of a person who resides in the employee’s household
    • Child of a person who resides in the employee’s household.
  • Removed the “obligation to provide care” requirement from use of temporary disability leave time for an individual who resides in the employee’s household.
  • Removed “The maximum time which may be used for family members in one year is 30 working days. This maximum may be extended by the supervisor, dean or director, provost, executive vice president, or president. This time is cumulative.”

HRP&P #84.0 Funeral Leave ( http://www.uky.edu/HR/policies/hrpp084.htm  ) -- Basic changes include the following:

  • Introduced language adding individuals in the following relationships for two days of allowable funeral leave:
    • Steps, halves, and in-law relationships for grandparent and grandchild
    • Relationships created by marriage for aunt/uncle and niece/nephew
    • Legal dependent of the employee
    • Parent of a person who resides in the employee’s household
    • Child of person who resides in the employee’s household.

Employees are asked to familiarize themselves with these revised policies and procedures. Supervisors are asked to communicate this information to all their staff, especially those without computer access. Human Resources Policies & Procedures may be found at http://www.uky.edu/HR/policies/.
