UK Medical Laboratory Science Program to Celebrate 80th Anniversary in Grand Style

Published: Aug 23, 2013

LEXINGTON, Ky. (August 23, 2013) –  The University of Kentucky Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program will celebrate its 80th anniversary with a 30s-style gala on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Embassy Suites Lexington, 1801 Newtown Pike.

The gala is black-tie-optional and will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The program will begin at 8 p.m., and the evening will continue with a live band and dancing until midnight. Tickets are $50 per person or $500 for a table of 10 and include dinner, a drink ticket and dancing. You may RSVP and pay online at http://www.mc.uky.edu/mls or by contacting Keturah Taylor at 859-218-0479.

The MLS Program, part of the UK College of Health Sciences, was established in 1933 as Medical Technology. It was one of the first such programs in the U.S. and one of the first medical programs established at UK, existing before the College of Health Sciences. The UK MLS program is one of three bachelor’s degree level, university-based MLS programs in Kentucky. The intensive 18-month program provides sequential instruction in laboratory medicine for students who have been well-prepared in science and mathematics during the first two years of study at the university.

In Fall 2012, the MLS Program began offering courses to students at the UK Center of Excellence in Rural Health in Hazard and the first class is due to graduate in December 2013.
