LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 4, 2013) — At the University of Kentucky, faculty and staff members have lots of ways to "see blue."
UKNow's "Who Does That?" series shows just how by featuring the unique students, faculty and staff who make UK tick.
John Herbst, executive director of the UK Student Center, sees blue by supporting student success every day.
"To have an opportunity to work with the students here, it doesn't make any difference how long the hours are or what days of the week it is, it's an exciting opportunity to work with students and see them succeed," Herbst said. "The thing that is so, so great about this position is to see students succeed at something that they never dreamt they'd be able to do, and that is the true reward of being at the University of Kentucky."
Darrell Jones, grill cook at Ovid's Café, sees blue by helping maintain a positive, friendly environment.
"I have a son in college that's away and I would hope somebody would make him feel comfortable, so that's what I try to do," Jones said. "It's a great atmosphere; like I said, I love kids, and I've got kids of my own, so I get along with kids real well. My wife calls me a big kid. So, it's the ideal place for me, and I love food so what more can you ask for? It's probably the only job I would do for free."
Bedia Collins, UK flower bed designer, sees blue by making the UK campus a beautiful place.
"Just driving by knowing that you have something to do with it makes you feel great," Collins said. "I absolutely love my job. As a matter of fact, people stop me all the time and say I have the best job on campus, and that is a fact."
Zach Fuqua sees blue by helping students successfully navigate through their college journeys.
"We get to help them start on a journey and see them kind of get to that next step," Fuqua said. "We get to grow to that point of choosing that major or choosing that career path and I think that really makes a lot of us feel pretty good that we've had a hand in that."
