UK Team Raises Nearly $3,000 for Relay for Life

LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 15, 2011) — The University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center/Kentucky Medical Services Foundation Relay for Life team raised $2,998 for the American Cancer Society's signature event last month.

The Relay for Life is an overnight relay that allows participants to celebrate those who have survived cancer and remember those who have lost their lives to the disease. The Relay raises funds to support the Society's programs. Many of ACS's programs, including the Patient Navigator Program, directly benefit Markey patients.

Led by first-time Relay captain Alicia Baker, the team raised their funds by soliciting donations, holding raffles at the Relay for Live event, and selling official UK Relay for Life t-shirts. Baker, who participates in the Relay for Life every year, says that she plans to be involved in the Relay for a long time to come.

"The Relay for Life is something very dear to my heart," Baker said. "And I will continue to support this event for years to come."
