UK Walks for Heart Health

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 1, 2013) — The University of Kentucky Health & Wellness program is taking advantage of competitive collegiate school spirit with another friendly rivalry — the third annual American Heart Association’s University Moving for Healthy Hearts Challenge.

During the 10-week period beginning April 3 and ending June 11, employees from the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville will compete to record the highest average number of steps taken walking, running or participating in other activities.  Last year, the trophy went to the Cardinals, but UK is hoping to bring it back to the Bluegrass this spring.

“It’s easy to get involved,” said UK President Eli Capilouto. If you already walk and exercise regularly — or if you’re thinking about starting — we need you to support our Big Blue team.

“Walking is one of the most effective forms of exercise — as few as 30 minutes a day provides heart healthy benefits. This friendly competition has a serious purpose, and (our employees’) involvement means a great deal to UK as we set a positive example for our campus, community and state,” he added.

To launch the healthy hearts competition, the UK campus will sponsor a kickoff walk at noon Wednesday, April 3, National Walking Day. Prizes and music highlight the event — located between the Rose Street Parking Structure and the Mining and Minerals Building — as special surprise guests lead the easy half-mile walk around central campus.

In order for an employee’s activities to count, they must register now and then periodically record their activities. Spouses and sponsored dependents are eligible to participate, too.
